Grease Monkeys is aimed at young people between the
ages of 14 and 24 at risk of exclusion from school or not
employed, in training or education but this is not set in
As we will be working on mainly cars and other vehicles it
would be an idea for anyone coming on the program to
have these interest but this is not essential. Cars we have
worked on so far are:- Mini auto grass racer, Nissan Micra,
Nissan Sunny, Rover 25 Gti and a Honda Prelude 2.2vtec.
We try to keep a motor sports theme with at least one of
the cars we have in at any time e.g. mini auto grass racer,
Honda track day car.
A typical evening....
would consist of a brief introduction to what work we will be
doing that evening and any health and safety issues
involved. Next we put our overalls and boots on (supplied
by us) and set about the mechanical tasks for that evening,
such as working on brakes, engine, suspension, tyre
changing, bodywork and plenty of other things.
Then about half way through we stop for a drink and biscuit
and have a chat about different life skills such as
budgeting, team work and other helpful subjects. This is
done in a way that is fun and enjoyable mainly by team
members giving examples of mistakes they have made
and how they should have done things differently. After that
it's back to the workshop to continue the work on the cars
until about 10 minutes from the end when we tidy up and
admire our handy work.
As a reward for good attendance,
towards the end of the 12 week
program we will take the group for
a day out, such as carting or a
motor sports event.
